Children are ages 3 1/2 -5 years old in this class. Children learn in a play-based environment using a Reggio Emilia inspired approach. This approach believes that children are active participants in their learning by promoting creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. Children are encouraged to use their five senses by listening, smelling, touching, moving and observing while they learn. They are provided with a variety of hands-on learning opportunities to discover and explore their own interests.
The classroom environment is an extension from the preschool class. Our preschool children learn through play and exploring the centers while learning about new developmental concepts. The preschool teacher uses the Ohio Early Learning Content Standards and the Creative Curriculum to guide the weekly lesson plans along with the child's interest. The PreK teacher uses the Read It Again literacy supplement weekly to help support early literacy. This is used along with a formal kindergarten readiness assessment to help them prepare for transitioning to kindergarten. The teacher meets with families twice a year to discuss their child's progress and developmental goals. Then as children master the goals, more goals are created to continue the child's academic progress throughout the school year.
